The director calls, “places, everyone.”  The lights turn low, the crowd quiets for the performance, and the curtain rises… If this scene sounds exciting, then you have a passion for the theater! Now that you are retired, this is the perfect time to immerse yourself in the theater.

Acting is not only for the young. If taking center stage excites you, then check productions in your area – there is a whole world of roles available for people in the baby boomer generation. However, if studying a script for an audition sounds intimidating, there are many other ways to get involved with the theater.

 

Volunteer at the theater

There is no better way to feel connected to the theater than to get involved. Local theaters are often run on a shoe-string budget, so they are always looking for people willing to help. No matter what abilities or skills you have to offer, there is a volunteer opportunity for you. Perhaps you have some sewing talents to share with the costume design, or maybe you are a photo-buff that can take headshots and help with the programs.

Even if you don’t want to sign up for an elaborate task, you can still get involved with the theater by helping out in the ticket booth or as an usher. Even if the work is simple, many people find that volunteering for local nonprofit theaters gives them a great sense of satisfaction. Aside from the benefits of making new friends and learning the secrets behind the scenes, theaters typically provide great perks for volunteers, such as tickets to the best shows and invitations to private events.

 

Take an acting class

If acting has always piqued your interest, but you haven’t had the time or confidence to pursue training, now is the perfect time to take an acting class. There are many acting classes available for the retirement community – search your area for local acting coaches. Acting classes can be fun and helpful for retirees in many ways; they help with memory and speaking, they help restore self-confidence, and they help build interactive skills for creating friendships, which leads to a beautiful group mentality.

Most of us have some incredible stories to tell at this stage in life, why not take a storytelling class? Adult storytelling classes are an excellent way for adults to learn how to present, prepare, and hold an audience’s attention. The skills that are also great for family gatherings or games of bridge with your friends.

 

Local senior theaters

With about 77 million baby boomers, US theaters are starting to embrace the retirement community. Senior-based performances range from musicals to spoken word performances, so check out your local theater to see what they have to offer.

Following your passions for the theater can enrich your life in many ways; you’ll make new friends with similar interests while learning more about the backstage world of the theater! It’s time to set the stage and bring purpose to your retirement!
